A Belt Lipectomy is a surgical procedure designed to remove loose skin and fat around your waist. This is also called an abdominal lipectomy and panniculectomy. The procedure is typically performed after you lose a large amount of weight.

Reasons for Considering a Belt Lipectomy:

  • Excess skin in abdominal area resulting from a large weight loss.
  • Rashes, odor and discomfort in the abdominal area.
  • Trouble urinating.
  • Pain with sexual activity.

General Procedure

The Belt Lipectomy procedure utilizes general anesthesia throughout the surgical procedure. The surgeon will make an incision, encircling the lower back and buttocks extending to the front lower stomach to remove excess skin and tissue as well to create a smooth contour.

Recovery Process

A support garment will need to be worn for several weeks after the surgery. A tube is placed beneath the skin to drain the fluid build-up in your incisions. You will be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection as well as medication to control pain as needed. Puckering of the incisions will smooth out over several months and the scar may remain red from six months to one year following surgery. You will receive post-operative instructions from your surgeon that will aid in your healing to ensure a successful recovery.
