How to Prevent Aging Skin: Know the Secret

As we age, many changes occur in our body, including changes in our skin. Fine lines and wrinkles on your face become more common as you get older. Skin becomes drier with age, fat recedes in your face, and the skin sags. The texture and tone of the skin might change as well.

Though aging is inevitable, it doesn't mean we have to give up hope of retaining our youthful appearance. There are ways to minimize its effects, such as quality skincare,
surgical cosmetic procedures, or other non-surgical procedures. This article will look into Sculptra, a highly effective non-surgical treatment for a youthful appearance.

Aging Comes with the Loss of Collagen

The first thing that happens when you age is the loss of collagen and elastin. Collagen is a significant component of our connective tissue and is a vital protein responsible for the strength and vitality of our skin, hair, nails, and muscles. The dermis of our skin contains collagen, which helps maintain the skin's suppleness and youthful appearance.

One of its most important roles is cartilage production, which helps the skin retain its shape and structure. When we are young, our bodies produce enough collagen to have clear and glowing skin, but this production slows down and eventually stops as we age. After the age of 25, our collagen levels decrease by one percent every year. This process accelerates after the age of 35! By the time you reach 50 years old, you could have lost up to half of the collagen you had when you were younger.

This collagen depletion eventually causes visible signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin, and brittle nails. Collagen depletion affects other body parts, making you less flexible and more prone to injury.

Apart from the natural aging process, you lose collagen quicker due to:

  • Sun damage
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Poor diet

Regain a Youthful Glow with the Sculptra

The best way to target the signs of aging is to address its underlying cause, not just the symptom. Sculptra is an FDA-approved facial injectable that helps gradually replace lost collagen — an underlying cause of facial aging.

This treatment works as a kind of collagen replacement therapy, helping to restore a more youthful appearance. Sculptra injections can restore your face to its original shape, volume, and texture. The key ingredient in this facial injectable is a unique poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) formula, which is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body. This procedure stimulates the natural production of collagen to correct signs of facial fat loss and restore your face's fullness and youthful appearance.

The doctor injects Sculptra into the second layer of skin or the deep dermis, where it acts as a scaffold for new collagen formation. This treatment is designed to be used over multiple sessions. It does not work as instantaneously as traditional dermal fillers, such as Restylane and Juvederm, to fill in fine lines and wrinkles. There may be some immediate results, but it can take some months to see the full effect of the treatment. Over time, the body makes its own natural collagen to replace what has been lost due to aging and sun damage. The result is subtle but noticeable improvements in the skin's structure for a more youthful-looking appearance.

Treatment Areas of Sculptra

The treatment areas for Sculptra are almost the same as those for other dermal fillers, with the exception of the lips. This type of facial injection is an excellent way to fill in areas of the face that lack volume.

The most popular treatment areas are:

  • Nasolabial folds (the lines that run from the nose to the corner of the lips)
  • Marionette lines (the lines that run from the corner of the mouth downward)
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Worry lines on the forehead
  • Under-eye circles and hollowness
  • Cheeks
  • Jawline

After several treatments, you may notice fuller cheeks, less hollowing around your eyes, and fewer lines and wrinkles on your face. Here are some Sculptra before and after pictures.

What Are the Benefits of the Sculptra?

Sculptra is a cosmetic treatment to attain a fresher and younger look. There are many advantages of the Sculptra procedure over other standard cosmetic procedures, which include:

1.Non-surgical and minimal downtime

If you wish to gain a natural-looking result without going under the knife, then this option is perfect for you. There is less risk of side effects than surgical procedures such as a facelift. The treatment is relatively quick, taking about 30 minutes to complete the procedure. Moreover, Sculptra can be used in multiple areas at once. You can use it on your cheeks and nasolabial folds simultaneously. Above all, there's minimal downtime after the procedure. Most people can return to their normal activities within 24 hours of the treatment.

2.Longer lasting results

The Sculptra treatment has many advantages over other anti-aging treatments. The most obvious one is that it lasts longer than other fillers. Based on the area treated and how many treatments are required, the results can last as long as two years before maintenance treatments are needed.

3.FDA approved

Sculptra was initially formulated in 1999. This treatment received an FDA approval in 2004 to treat HIV-associated lipoatrophy (severe facial fat loss). In 2009, the FDA approved the treatment for wrinkles and folds in the face that helps deliver a younger-looking appearance.

4.Natural-looking results

Another benefit is that Sculptra works gradually by stimulating your body's own natural collagen production. This means that the results look natural, with no abrupt or artificial, "overdone" appearance like you might see with other treatments.

Who Is the Best Candidate for Sculptra?

If you have had at least some reduction of your facial volume and need a little recovery time or refresh of the face, then Sculptra is ideal for you. This treatment can also be for individuals looking for subtle results over time instead of an "instant fix." Doctors generally recommend the procedure for patients with healthy immune systems who wish to correct shallow to deep nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles.

People with severe allergies or have sensitivities to the ingredients of Sculptra should not use this treatment. People who experience keloid formation (abnormal scarring that grows beyond what is typical) or hypertrophic scarring (excessive, bumpy scarring) should also not use Sculptra.

What to Expect During Treatment

During a preliminary visit, you will discuss your medical history and any allergies or conditions that you may have with our physician. We will advise you to stop taking naproxen, ibuprofen, and aspirin for a few days before the procedure. Sculptra injections are usually performed by a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon in a clinic or office setting. Typically, the entire process only takes about 30 minutes from start to finish.

The doctor will mark the injection sites and cleanse your face before injecting. Then they will apply a numbing cream about a half-hour before the procedure to minimize discomfort. After the treated area is numbed, your doctor will inject Sculptra into the area of concern using a thin needle.

The treatment is very similar to that of other dermal fillers. The only difference is that a series of injections will be used throughout multiple appointments to achieve your desired results. The number and intervals between injections vary among individuals. Our specialist will determine how many sessions are optimal for you. A typical treatment regimen consists of three injections spaced three to four months apart.

Your face may be red and have some swelling immediately after your treatment, but these effects should go away in no time. You should be able to resume your normal activities after treatment. The doctor will provide you with any special instructions you may need to follow, including

  • The need to massage the areas with clean hands
  • Avoiding sun exposure and tanning beds
  • Applying a cold compress on the skin
