How to Prevent and Treat Wrinkles

Are you noticing more and more wrinkles every time you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror? Growing older is bound to bring wrinkles, but they don't have to be inevitable and permanent. While we cannot stop time, there are plenty of things you can do to delay or prevent wrinkles and other signs of aging.

This blog compiles how to reduce aging signs, particularly guaranteed ways to prevent wrinkles and even reduce the severity of existing ones through wrinkle treatments.

Why Do We Get Wrinkles?

Fibers of collagen and elastin make up the dermis, providing structural support for your skin, but they also become less flexible and elastic with age. When these fibers lose their ability to stretch and return to their original shape, they can no longer support the outer layer of your skin as well as they used to — leading to wrinkles forming on your face, neck, hands, and other body parts.

Additionally, the breakdown of elastin and collagen weakens the skin's barrier function, making it thinner and more susceptible to signs of aging. Other causes of wrinkles include:

  • Sun damage
  • Nutrient deficiency (lack of vitamin A, D, C, and E)
  • Poor diet
  • Stress
  • Unhealthy lifestyle (smoking and excessive alcohol consumption)
  • Repetitive or excessive facial expressions (squinting, frowning, smiling)
  • Genetics

How to Prevent Wrinkles?

If you're worried about wrinkles, you should start taking care of your skin as soon as possible! You are less likely to experience wrinkles later in life if you start taking care of your skin early. Listed below are some of the best ways to prevent wrinkles:

  1. Wear sunscreen every day, rain or shine
  2. Consume plenty of water to stay hydrated
  3. Moisturize your skin regularly
  4. Adopt a healthy diet
  5. Exercise regularly
  6. Get enough sleep
  7. Keep stress under control
  8. Don't smoke or drink alcohol excessively

Wear sunscreen every day, rain or shine

Make sure to avoid spending too much time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest. Be sure to use sunscreen with at least SPF 30 on exposed areas year-round — not just during summer — and reapply after swimming or sweating heavily.

Consume plenty of water to stay hydrated

Water removes toxins from your body through sweat to keep them from building up in your system. It also prevents dehydration which causes puffiness around the eyes, dry lips, and cracked heels. It also prevents dehydration which causes puffiness around the eyes, dry lips, and cracked heels.

Moisturize your skin regularly

Regularly moisturizing your skin will prevent wrinkles. Your skin needs moisture as it ages because it loses its natural oils and water content over time. In turn, this results in the skin drying out or forming cracks, which leads to fine lines and wrinkles on your skin's surface. To avoid this problem, apply a moisturizer after washing your face every morning and night before bed.

Adopt a healthy diet

When you don't eat well, your skin can look older because it lacks essential vitamins and minerals that keep it plump and healthy. Opt for plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein sources, and low-fat dairy products daily to ensure you get the nutrition needed for healthy-looking skin. Healthy foods are also rich in antioxidants that help protect your body from free radicals that may contribute to aging and wrinkling of the skin.

Exercise regularly

Being active boosts blood flow to your skin, which helps deliver nutrients and oxygen that keep cells healthy and plump. It also releases endorphins that make exercising feel good, making it easier to stick with an exercise program over time!

Get enough sleep

When you don't sleep enough, your skin will age faster due to stress hormones and a lack of repair time at night. You'll also be more prone to skin problems like acne. Getting around 8 to hrs. of good night's rest is advisable daily. Whenever you sleep, make sure to sleep on your back and use silk pillowcases to avoid fine lines caused by friction on your skin.

Keep stress under control

As a reaction to stress, your body releases cortisol, a hormone that can break down collagen and elastin, which form wrinkles. Learn how to manage stress with relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or as simple as playing music or going for a quick walk.

Don't smoke or drink alcohol excessively

Smoking and drinking too much alcohol can prematurely age your skin. Alcohol consumption also makes you look older because it dehydrates your body by increasing water loss through sweating and urination. It also causes high blood pressure and increases free-radical damage to collagen and elastin. Smoking also reduces blood flow to your skin, resulting in a lack of oxygen supply, which makes your skin look dull and tired.
