ear surgery otoplasty

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, actively minimizes ear protrusion away from the skull, making it a transformative technique. While we commonly perform this procedure on children aged four to fourteen, it's important to note that otoplasty can also benefit adults. For children with ears that "stick out," the teasing and ridicule they may face can harm their mental well-being. We can help children and adults regain confidence and embrace their unique beauty by addressing ear protrusion through otoplasty.

Otoplasty isn't limited to individuals with protruding ears; it can also address other aesthetic concerns. Otoplasty offers a solution for those with large ears or congenital irregularities that affect their appearance. Genetic factors or unintentional damage, such as loss of an ear or part of it, may result in abnormal ear features. Thankfully, otoplasty effectively treats these issues, providing patients with long-term satisfaction and positive changes to their overall appearance.

Reasons for considering Ear Surgery:

  • Bring the ears into proportion if they "stick out" too much.
  • Correct folded ear tips (lop ear).
  • Reshape earlobes that are too lengthy or too far apart.
  • Increase the size of tiny ears or other congenital abnormalities.
  • Resolve unintentional harm, such as the loss of an ear.

General Procedure

Otoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia to ensure comfort throughout the procedure. The standard process involves bringing the ears closer to the head. The surgery begins with a well-concealed incision in the crease behind the ear. This incision allows our skilled surgeon to reshape the cartilage behind the ears, positioning them closer to the head for a more balanced appearance. The process takes around one to two hours, depending on the extent of the operation. During your initial consultation, our doctor will discuss various surgical techniques to address specific irregularities, tailoring the procedure to your unique needs.

Recovery Process

After the surgery, you'll find large bandages wrapped around your head. These bandages are crucial in securing the ears in their new position and facilitating the healing process. The dressings are usually removed within a week and replaced with smaller bandages. Post-operative instructions will include plenty of rest and limited activity to promote a speedy recovery and reduce downtime. We can effectively manage any minor pain experienced by the patient through the use of oral medication. While complications are rare, diligently following the post-operative directions will minimize potential issues.
