Microneedling vs. Dermaplaning: What’s the Difference?

Various cosmetic treatments are available for persons with fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, or other skin flaws. Two procedures that improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles and produce radiant, healthier skin are micro needling and dermaplaning.

Your dermatologist or aesthetician administers these procedures. We aim to provide services that promote your glow and help you achieve a younger-looking you. But how do the two differ from one another? Can we combine both treatments for better results? Which is the right choice for my skin?

What is Microneedling?

Cosmetic micro-needling is a non-surgical procedure involving sticking tiny, sterile needles into the skin. Your body produces more collagen and elastin due to the little injuries, which helps your skin repair and makes you appear younger. Collagen is a protein that ensures that your skin is firm, youthful and smooth. As you age, collagen in your skin decreases, along with other factors promoting its reduction, such as scarring, acne, and stretch marks. This makes our skin need a little help to produce more collagen for our skin to use, which can be done through puncturing our skin, also known as microneedling.

Benefits of Microneedling:

  • Improves your overall appearance
  • Increase skin’s texture
  • Lighten fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimize stretch marks
  • Reduce abdominal scars
  • Effective on the scalp for hair restoration

Before the procedure occurs, specific operations may be prepared to attain the best possible outcome. You may be asked to stop taking medication such as ibuprofen, acne medications, or topical retinoids.

MDPen Microneedling

MDPen (Micro-dermal needling) microneedling is a risk-free, minimally invasive process. It significantly enhances collagen formation and elasticity, giving skin a smoother, more radiant, and younger-looking appearance. For best results, it is recommended to undergo multiple sessions. We will advise you on your best plan of action and schedule of treatment, depending on your goals.

Where is microneedling used?

  • Eyes and mouth
  • Nose
  • Forehead
  • Acne scars
  • Chin
  • Neck stretch marks
  • Abdominal scars
  • Breast reduction scars
  • Hips and love handles
  • Scalp for hair restoration

The MDPen is run through your skin, producing micro-channels that enable collagen and elastin production. This also increases the ability of your skin to absorb nutrients, such as those present in the applied serum. The “small injuries” produced increased blood flow and other growth factors in the area for a glowing result.

ProfoundⓇ

Profound is a non-surgical procedure involving a radio-frequency emitting microneedling device. The combination of microneedling and radio-frequency waves enables the tightening of tissues, improves skin volume, and diminishes cellulite appearance. This then gives you a more youthful appearance delaying the signs of aging. Unlike MDPen, Profound would only need one session to impede aging.

ProfoundⓇ treatment delivers varying temperatures to the deep layers of the skin where energy is needed the most. The energy will then break down tissue, enabling faster and more natural healing. It allows your body to produce more elastin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid for more rejuvenated skin, making healthier tissues.

Post-treatment measures for microneedling involve gently cleansing and moisturizing your skin. Avoid scrubbing, rubbing, or applying exfoliants for a week. Sunscreens may also be added to your daily skincare routine to keep them moisturized throughout the day. Some post-treatment side effects may also include minor swelling or bruising. Although, from recent studies, these may lessen or heal after 5-10 days, depending on the area treated and the anesthesia protocol.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a safe yet effective procedure involving using a sterile blade to scrape off the topmost layer of dead skin and minimal facial hair. Although, this procedure is not suggested for people with acne-prone skin as it will result in active scarring. In case of breakouts, one must wait until the acne fades before undergoing the procedure.

After the treatment, you could see the difference almost immediately. After the procedure, you may go back to your usual skincare routine. Although your skin might be sensitive after the procedure, make sure to put sunscreen with SPF30 sunscreen or higher to reduce the risks of hyperpigmentation. Dermaplaning has instant results.

Although some would use makeup options to achieve their desired overall look, some would opt for dermaplaning for a better glow and a clearer complexion. Dermaplaning can also be an initial treatment for a much more invasive procedure for your skin.

Dermaplaning is suitable for:

  • Minimizing acne scars
  • Lighten fine lines and wrinkles
  • Removal of unwanted hairs
  • Enhance skin texture and tone

Post-treatment measures for dermaplaning would involve protecting your skin with SPF 30 sunscreen or higher to prevent hyperpigmentation. Applying a gentle moisturizer or hyaluronic mask may also be added to your overall skincare routine to keep your skin hydrated.

Microneedling or Dermaplaning

Microneedling aids in the thorough stimulation of collagen production and the lightening up of visible scars. Dermaplaning is a more straightforward procedure involving the topmost layer of the skin. It aims to remove dead skin cells and hair, resulting in younger and smooth skin with a glowing complexion. Dermaplaning may be considered a preparatory procedure before microneedling to allow deeper penetration of the serum into the skin and give you better and faster results.

Microneedling + Dermaplaning: An Optimal Combination?

You read it right! Microneedling and Dermaplaning can be an optimal combination as this will result in the most desirable outcome for your skin. Combined, these two procedures may treat uneven skin tone and texture, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, large pores, and unwanted facial hair. Doctors typically advise Dermaplaning before microneedling. It allows better absorption of topical ointments in your skin. Moreover, it also produces the expected results efficiently.
